Round Two, Mid North Coast Mountain Bike series, Kempsey, 16 May

Plenty of rider support for the second round of what is proving to be a very popular mountain bike series. Conditions suited Team Refusenix with a fast, flowing single track course.

Drew Gilchrist took first place in the juniors with Ryan Gilchrist coming second. Elite men, Geoff Gilchrist took first place after a hotly contested six laps. Jaye Gilchrist, on her shiny new Epic, came in first in the  Masters Women class. Trevor Creighton took first in the Men's Super Masters, and just to keep everything number one, Sue Webber took first in the Women's Supermasters event.

If that wasn't enough, Drew Gildchrist won the Dash for Cash handicap event.

Those Refusenix jerseys must be magic.

Delxc Flow, 6 hour mountain bike, Warwick, Queensland, 24 April

Launch of team Refusenix - the Grafton City Cycles mountain bike team brought podium places for all our competitors. The smart new jerseys were the subject of plenty of comment from other riders.

In the juniors, Drew Gilchrist came second after a closely raced event, Ryan Gilchrist took third. In the mixed pairs Geoff and Jaye Gilchrist put in a fine effort to take third place. Trevor Creighton stepped up to second in the men's solo single speed class and Sue Webber took second in the women's solo 45 plus class in her first solo 6 hour event.

The organisers did a great job providing excellent camping, race organisation and marshalling, food and drink. We'd certainly go back next year for that. However it is a tough course with some hard climbs, loose soil and rocks. No one could take it easy. I don't think Flow is really the description I'd use, maybe the Delxc Grind.

Australian Solo 24 Hour Mountain Bike Championships, Canberra, 3-4 April

Grafton City Cycles sponsored rider, Geoff Gilchrist joined Trevor Creighton and Sue Webber for the long drive to Canberra to the National championships. 170 competitors lined up for the midday start on the 9km Madura Pines track. It's a pretty flat circuit with a couple of climbs, a collection of gullys, plenty of switchbacks and more roots and rocks than a blues festival. The powdery soil deteriorated over the event leaving some rough descents that took their toll on bikes and riders.

World Champion Jason English won the men's open event. Geoff Gilchrist took third in the men's 45-49 with 33 laps (297km), Trevor Creighton won silver in the men's 50-59 class on 30 laps (270km) on his dual suspension single-speed Merida, and Sue Webber came second in the women's 50-59 class with 12 laps (108km).

Geoff and Trevor have qualified for the World Championships in Canberra in October.

HVMR, 12/6hour enduro, Port Macquarie, 20 March

Been awhile since we had an away fixture but now the weather is cooling, the winter mtb season begins again. The Port enduro is a popular race with a good atmosphere. A little too much track furniture for my liking (but then different riders prefer different courses). The 10.4km track is mostly single track with a couple of climbs, some fun swooping downhill switchbacks and plenty of berms, jumps and bumps. The weather was perfect and the track was dry except for a couple of muddy spots and didn't get dusty until the last laps.

Jason English won the 12hr solo race, no surprise as it's his home circuit, with 25 laps (260km). Grafton CC and Refusenix manifesto-writer Trevor Creighton single-speeded his way to 17 laps (178km), coming in 13th overall, but first and only in the 12 hour single speed category, if there had been one.

In the six-hour Refusenix rider, Geoff Gilchrist took the solo honours with 12 laps (124km) and overall class honours. In the 6 hour pairs, team Don't Eat That (Sue and Maddie) rode 8 laps (41km each) to come second in the women's pairs.

All in all, a good warm up for the National 24 hour solo event in Canberra over Easter.

Fat Tyre Festival, Ourimbah, 22 November

Hot, hot, hot. Some of the hottest MTB riders around got even hotter in the 40plus heat at Ourimbah. It was billed as an 8 hour 15 minute race but the organisers cut a couple of hours off to avoid total meltdown. "It's a long way to go for a race" conceded local single-speed legend, Trevor Creighton. Not one, but two 24 hour solo world champions battled it out for first place in the solo men's class. Craig Gordon won the day on 13 laps with Jason English second on 12 laps. If he'd entered the opens Grafton City Cycles sponsored ride, Geoff Gilchrist would have come fifth, instead he took the honours winning the Men's solo masters category. GGC, rider Trevor brought home the booty too with a third placing in the single speed class.

In case you think this experience knocked some sense into Trevor, he was at it again a week later on the Coffs Harbour Club Full Monty Event. Taking out the single speed honours after another gruelling 60km ride.

Freedom Marathon, 17 October

Golfers do it for money, Rugby League players for cash and notoriety. Roadies chase coloured jerseys but for mountain bikers, it’s the pursuit of tyres. And last weekend (17 October) team GCC took away some booty at the very hilly but excellent Freedom Marathon, held in Nightcap National Park and environs.

The Freedom’s been running a few years now, and nearly 300 competitors fronted up for the three distances on offer – 20km, 40km and 60km. Each distance began on the same outward leg, before the 20, then 40km legs peeled off home at appropriate points. Regardless of the distance chosen, everyone got treated to some beautiful, if very hilly, riding; swooping up and down the ramparts of the Nightcap range.

Sue and Trevor went up, in the company of  our niece Maddy, and Team GCC Specialized pilot Geoff Gilchrist and partner Jaye. At the start we met up with plenty of  mates from Coffs races, including Brian Cockbain from Macksville sporting his still shining Epic. So the social side of things was well taken care of and the overall atmosphere was really relaxed and friendly.

After varied terms of suffering, Sue came out with third in her age division in the 20km as well as third overall woman in 20km (not bad, given that she was on a single speed!), Maddy won her age 20km division – 14-17 years girls. Maddy and Sue got some fine etched beer glasses (may also be used for soft drinks), while Trevor was beaming with delight at his prize tyre for total domination of the single speed 60km category (well, there were only one or two other riders in it, but what the heck… why NOT beam with pride).

Geoff had an excellent performance, with victory in the 40-49 men’s 60km and a 4th place outright (and that with a rotten cold that hasn’t let go for weeks now), as did Jaye, taking 2nd in Women’s 40-49, 40km.

Despite a bad back from trying to pedal ALL THOSE HILLS, Trevor reckons it’s a race worth revisiting and is already considering his gearing for the 2010 assault. If you don’t want to wait that long for a race, Coffs Harbour Club are holding a 2 hour night race at Cows with Guns on  31 October.
